This blog is about cameras, but today we’re going to speak about a smartphone – a recently announced smartphone that has a really amazing camera. Say hello to the Nokia PureView cameraphone!

We had many expectations from this year’s MWC, especially from HTC and Samsung that were going to announce a number of innovations to form the trends of the mobile market in 2012. We didn’t expect anything great from Nokia, since the Finnish manufacturer was rumored to show only a couple of mid-range phones from the Asha line, plus some new Lumia devices. However, Nokia surprised us with a revolutionary phone – the PureView 808.

The Nokia PureView 808 was rumored earlier, and we knew it was going to be a cameraphone, but no one could have guessed that it was coming with a… 41MP sensor! So it shoots 7728 x 5368 pixels pics and 1080p videos at 30fps. And Carl Zeiss optics, auto-focus and Xenon flash make this phone’s camera even cooler.

Here is a sample pic taken by the Nokia PureView 808. It’s not with full resolution, of course (you can find the huge ones here), but you can still see how bright and amazingly detailed this shot is.

A secondary camera is present in this phone, too, but it’s just an ordinary VGA, nothing interesting here.

The other features of the Nokia PureView 808 aren’t that amazing, though they’re in no way inferior to the other high-end phones. It has a single-core 1.3 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM, so it will be rather fast; the display is a 4-incher of nHD (640 x 360), which is not bad either, though it could have had a higher resolution and a tighter pixel density.
The PureView 808 will also have 16GB of built-in memory and a microSD card slot, which is a rather rare yet a very good combination (usually phones have either an SD slot or a big amount of built-in memory). The battery is a standard Li-Ion 1400 mAh, which will provide 6-11 hours of talk-time. Not bad, eh?

Perhaps the only shortcoming of the phone is the OS – it runs Symbian Belle – a dying platform. The Belle version of Symbian is perhaps the lesser evil, so it’s not really that bad, but anyway, it would be much better if the phone used Windows Phone.

The Nokia 808 PureView is expected to arrive in the end of spring, most likely in May. As for the price, there’s no info about it yet, but the cool camera and the big amount of memory make us think the phone will be rather expensive.

If you aren’t buying a digital camera made specifically for children, keep in mind how easy it will be for your child to hold, point, and carry the camera. If your child is older, you may want to fore go a childish looking camera for a more adult style. You will need to be sure that your child can properly handle the camera no matter what style you get. For one thing, you don’t want a bulky camera that will be awkward for a child to carry around. You may also want to choose as simple a model as you can. Figuring out how to work the camera becomes more difficult the more buttons and features there are. In many ways, choosing a digital camera for kids is similar to choosing a starter camera for adults, with the additional consideration that it has to be easy to hold. Parents often begin their search for these cameras in the toy section of their favorite store. Unless you are shopping for toddlers or very young children this is probably not the best resource for you. With the amount of technological exposure your kids get at such young ages it is no surprise they tire easily of toys. The other factor is that the prices for entry level cameras are now so low that it’s hardly any cheaper to buy toy cameras. It may please you to know that you can find these entry level cameras for less than twenty dollars online as well as in discount retail stores. So as you begin shopping consider skipping the toy stage and moving right to adult cameras.

An SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera may be something to look into, even if you think it might be too advanced. For children ready to move beyond the cameras made by toy companies, an SLR might be your best option.

SLR digital cameras offer several important advantages. These cameras are not only durable and easy to use, but they also allow you to take pictures in dim light without using a flash. These cameras are actually ideal for kids because they are very simple to use. Your child may be able to get more out of an SLR camera than a standard digital, although you still wouldn’t want to give one to a toddler. Digital cameras can be a great gift for a child. Kids who learn photography learn not only about technology but how to be more observant of their world. As you look for the right digital camera for your child, keep these tips in mind. Keep it simple, however; they won’t need the most advanced camera.
